Clark County 4-H

Four Clark County 4-H youth earned the opportunity to represent Washington at the 4-H Eastern National Equine Roundup competition in Louisville, Ky., the first weekend in November. Patrick McCarthy, Sophia Howard, Brynn Larson and Erin McCarthy competed against 111 other 4-H members from across the state in horse judging during the state fair in Puyallup in September to earn the opportunity to compete at the national level. In Louisville, there were 86 competitors in the horse judging competition representing 23 states. The Washington team placed 12th in the halter division, 15th in performance, 15th in oral reasons and 14th overall. After the competition, the Washington team members took turns riding a mechanical bull and shopping at the North American Livestock Exposition, which hosts the 4-H competition and provides many of the awards. The team also had the opportunity to visit Churchill Downs where they got to go on a tour, see the backside of the track and talk to some horse owners and trainers.
