Creating a healthy community isn’t as simple as encouraging residents to hop on the stair-stepper. Increasingly, health professionals are realizing it takes planning.

“Planning for Healthy Communities — Health Impact Assessments in Land Use Planning” will be the topic of the Vancouver Planning Commission’s First Tuesday presentation from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Vancouver City Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Development patterns in neighborhoods affect air and water quality, traffic safety, physical activity and the mental health of the people who live there.

A panel of local planners and Clark County Public Health officials will discuss what has been learned, what role health impact assessments can play in the future and take questions.

Panelists include Jonnie Hyde, senior manager of assessment and environmental public health; Tricia Mortell, manager of nutrition and family wellness; Leslie Perdue, Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine for Oregon Health and Science University; and Colete Anderson, a planner for Clark County government.
