Union’s Morgan earns first-team all-state selection

Union senior Chris Morgan, who elevated his game at the state tournament to lead the Titans to the 3A state championship, was selected to the Class 3A all-state team.

Kentwood center Joshua Smith and Auburn Riverside guard Mercedes Wetmore were named the 2010 Associated Press Washington prep basketball players of the year.

The players are chosen by sports editors and writers around the state.

Morgan averaged 16.3 points per game in the regular season and earned first-team all-league honors in the Class 3A Greater St. Helens League.

At the state tournament in Tacoma, he averaged 16.5 points a game as the Titans beat three of the top-five ranked teams in the state.

Even though he was held to eight points in the championship game against Enumclaw, his two free throws with 8.4 seconds left gave Union 51-50 victory.

Melissa Williams of Camas, the 3A GSHL girls player of the year who averaged 15.6 points a game, was the only other Clark County player to earn an all-state honor. Williams earned honorable mention on the Class 3A girls all-state team.

Smith missed part of the season while recovering from a torn patellar tendon. When he got on the floor, his talent was impossible to ignore. The 6-foot-9 center is bound for UCLA next year.

Wetmore concluded her career as one of the most successful players in recent history. She led the Ravens to three state championships and won 104 games in her career.

Former Prairie standout Stephen Madison, was named to the Oregon Class 5A all-state team. Madison transferred to Jefferson of Portland and averaged 18 points a game in helping the Democrats win the state title.
