LEAGUE OVERVIEW

4A GSHL: Skyview is the defending league champion, Evergreen won the district title in 2009, and Mountain View might be poised to challenge both clubs in 2010. The Storm have several key returning players, including seniors Andy Long and Sean Chesebro, but also have several young players who should be key contributors. Evergreen, always tough on defense, has one of the area’s more creative players in senior Septi Danciu. Heritage, Battle Ground and Kelso might be in rebuilding phases, but all six teams make the district playoffs, so a hot team late in the season can make a run.

3A GSHL: The Class 3A Greater St. Helens League might be one of the toughest soccer leagues in the state. Camas is shooting for a 12th consecutive state tournament bid, and looks like it has the firepower to make another deep postseason run. But first it must escape a league that includes a Columbia River team that has reloaded after reaching the state tournament quarterfinals in 2009, Union and Prairie sides that are looking to land one of the two automatic bids into bi-district, and Hudson’s Bay and Fort Vancouver teams that have some offensive weapons.

2A GSHL: Ridgefield, led by seniors Brandon Dawkins and Kevin Roberts, hopes to build on its state berth of last spring, when the Spudders lost by a 1-0 score in the first round to runner-up Cheney. Led by senior midfielders John Corona and Jeff Corona, Washougal plans to push for a playoff spot.

TRICO: White Salmon is the defending Class 1A state champion. Many of La Center’s 11 seniors have played together since their youth, and hope to make a long state run after losing in the first round in 2009.
