SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Salem-Keizer School District officials have decided to seek outside help with their efforts to reduce levels of a naturally occurring radioactive gas that has appeared at one of their elementary schools.

The Statesman Journal reports that district officials will talk to potential bidders Thursday about reducing the levels of radon at Candalaria Elementary School in south Salem.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer after long-term exposure. The gas secretes from the ground, and can become a health concern if it becomes trapped indoors.

State department of human services Brett Sherry says the federal government recommends schools take action if there’s radon levels above 4 picoCuries per liter. Readings at Candalaria have ranged from barely detectable to 13.5 picoCuries.

Sherry said the levels found at Candalaria are no reason to panic.
