Snohomish County deputy cleared in fatal shooting

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — A Snohomish County sheriff’s deputy will not be charged in the shooting death of a man who argued with county weed killers at his home near Verlot.

The Daily Herald of Everett reports Prosecutor Mark Roe determined this week that Deputy Greg Rasar fired only as last resort.

The deputy killed the 44-year-old man, Daniel Wasilchen, last May after he pointed a gun at deputies who were backing up county workers. They intended to kill noxious weeds on the man’s property. He had ordered them to leave.

Wasilchen’s family has filed a $5 million claim against the county, accusing the noxious weed abatement coordinator of trespassing, being hostile and violating his constitutional rights.
