KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Royals right-hander Gil Meche will make his first start after being activated from the disabled list.

Meche was set back by shoulder tightness in spring training. He will start Sunday against the Boston Red Sox.

To make room for Meche on the roster, the Royals optioned infielder Mike Aviles to Triple-A Omaha in the Pacific Coast League. Aviles, who had reconstructive elbow surgery last July, hit .471 in spring training and led the Cactus League with a .517 on-base percentage.

Meche was 6-10 with a 5.09 ERA last year, making only four starts after the All-Star break because of shoulder and back problems.

With Aviles’ demotion, the Royals are carrying 13 pitchers and only three reserve position players.
