PARK CITY, Utah (AP) — Chris Grover has been promoted to head coach of the U.S. cross country ski team after four seasons in charge of the sprint team that produced stars Andy Newell and Kikkan Randall.

Grover replaces Pete Vordenberg, who will stay with the team but shift his focus to a new development strategy.

U.S. Nordic director John Farra said Grover has “earned the respect of the U.S. skiing community and the international coaches” for his work with the American sprinters.

He said Grover’s World Cup experience will “help him take this program to the next level as we make plans for Sochi and beyond.”

Grover joined the U.S. Ski Team in 1999 and headed up the development program from 2002-04. After a two-year leave, he returned to the team as sprint coach in 2006.
