PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Packy the elephant, a Portland celebrity since his birth in 1962, is celebrating his 48th birthday.
The famous Oregon Zoo elephant is expected to dig into a 40-pound birthday treat on Saturday as part of the zoo’s annual Elephantastic event. The zoo-prepared cake is a whole-wheat concoction topped with vet-approved frosting, apples, carrots and celery.
Packy was treated to a cupcake on Wednesday, his actual birthday. When he was born, he was hailed as the first elephant born in the United States in 44 years.
The Saturday party also celebrates the birthday of Packy’s son, Rama, who is known for painting with his trunk. Rama turned 27 on April 1.
