Study shows Ashland biased against black renters

ASHLAND, Ore. (AP) — A study commissioned by the city of Ashland shows blacks face discrimination when trying to rent property.

The Fair Housing Council of Oregon discovered that six of nine landlords in Ashland expressed racial bias when showing a rental to a black tester.

The study also found discriminatory treatment against renters with children and those with disabilities.

Brandon Goldman, a senior planner, told the Ashland Daily Tidings that the research was necessary because Ashland’s documents on housing impediments hadn’t been updated for more than a decade.

As part of the study, the Fair Housing Council sent employees to inquire separately about places listed for rent.

Goldman says some were told the property was no longer for rent, but then another person would come and it would still be available.
