BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Sabres have demoted rookie forward Nathan Gerbe to Portland in time for the start of the American Hockey League playoffs.

Gerbe became expendable in Buffalo after injured center Tim Connolly returned for the Sabres 2-1 playoff-opening win over the Boston Bruins on Thursday. Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is at Buffalo on Saturday.

Gerbe had a goal and two assists in eight games with Buffalo after being called up on March 28.

Portland opens its best-of-seven Calder Cup division semifinal playoff series against Manchester on Friday.
