Friday, April 16, 2010
Several environmental activities and events will occur over the following week, in honor of Earth Day on April 22.
The events include:
• 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday: The city of Vancouver will host an Earth Day event at the Marshall Community Center and Luepke Senior Center, 1009 E. McLoughlin Blvd. Admission is free.
The celebration includes lunch, vendors, door prizes, hands-on activities and garden resources. Demonstrations cover topics such as raised beds, planting, tending, harvesting, tree-planting and composting.
• April 17-25: Free admission to national parks across the country, including the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.
• 7 p.m. Wednesday: Coal-Free Washington Town Hall, Water Resources Education Center, 4600 S.E. Columbia Way. A coalition of environmental and public health groups will join faith-based organizations, climate scientists and energy experts during a town hall meeting in Vancouver. Environmental groups have been pressing TransAlta to phase out its coal-fired power plant in Centralia, the only coal-burning plant in Washington.
