PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Washington County authorities say more than $250,000 in gold has been stolen from a Hillsboro museum.

Sheriff’s Sgt. David Thompson said the burglary at the Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals was reported Saturday night. Assistant museum director Linda Kepford told investigators that someone broke in and stole many gold nuggets — one of the them weighs 42 ounces and is valued at more than $50,000.

The museum west of Portland is a popular destination for school field trips and for those with an interest in geology.

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to contact Detective Jim George at 503-846-6093.
