WESTON, Fla. (AP) — Jason Taylor says he’s joining the New York Jets because he feared their contract offer would be the only one he would receive.

The longtime Miami Dolphins linebacker said Tuesday he agreed to terms with the AFC East-rival Jets on a two-year contract.

Taylor, the NFL’s active sacks leader, joins a team he long considered an enemy. He wanted to stay in Miami but said he had to give the Jets an answer on their offer before the draft begins Thursday, and he had no assurance he would receive an offer from the Dolphins or anyone else.

Taylor said he expects to be booed by Dolphins fans the next time he plays in Miami, but he hopes they understand the reasons for his move to New York. He’ll be there beginning Wednesday.
