SEATTLE (AP) — A Teamsters strike has halted garbage pickups Thursday for Waste Management customers in King and Snohomish counties.

The company says on its website that customers should hold on to their trash and it will pick up a double load next week.

Union Local 174 spokesman Michael Gonzales says drivers walked off the job Wednesday because the company refused to negotiate.

Company spokeswoman Jackie Lang says the strike came as a surprise and the company expected talks to resume Friday. The company has said it’s prepared to maintain service during a strike with nonunion workers.

The previous contract expired at the end of March.

The strike affects solid waste service for about 1 million residents.
