PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Board of Forestry has opened 600,000 acres of state forests to logging, saying it will improve economic returns.

The board met Thursday in Salem to revise its forest management plan. The board reduced the amount of forestland that has to be allowed to stand and develop into older growth.

The affected lands include tracts in the Tillamook and Clatsop forests.

The forest management plan was adopted in 2001, but didn’t deliver as much timber as expected. Officials say the new plan should meet 70 percent of those early estimates.

Conservation groups say the decision puts salmon at risk and threatens habitat.
