Nearly 2,000 third-graders from Evergreen and Vancouver district schools completed a lap around the Fort Vancouver Visitor Center and nearby historic grounds Friday.

The annual Children’s Cultural Parade lets youngsters display their own family heritage, both in colorful costume and described on posterboard.

It’s a celebration that culminates study in the classroom, and is coordinated by the National Park Service.

The morning parade also serves as kickoff for the International Discovery Walk Festival that runs through Sunday in Vancouver. For a 14th year, walking enthusiasts will flock to the Columbia River waterfront, the Fort Vancouver National Site and the Burnt Bridge Creek Greenway.

Today is Junior Ranger Day at the fort’s visitor center.

Free admission to Fort Vancouver and other National Park attractions nationwide also runs through Sunday.
