PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The executive director of the Oregon Student Assistance Commission has resigned after the agency angered state leaders by budgeting for more student grants than it could pay.
The commission appointed Mike Marsh, a retired state budget director, as the interim director while it searches for a permanent replacement for Dennis Johnson, who resigned Friday.
A spokeswoman for Gov. Ted Kulongoski said he did not press for Johnson’s resignation, but the governor “does believe there should be new leadership” at the agency.
The commission reported to the Legislature in February it had exceeded its $57 million budget for student grants by $9.7 million.
