Steve Hook, who guided the Skyview girls basketball program to its only state placing in 2008, has resigned as head coach.

Hook, 58, coached Skyview for the past eight years, leading the Storm to back-to-back Class 4A state tournament appearances in 2007 and 2008. The 2008 squad placied fifth.

The past two years, Hook led Skyview to 4A Greater St. Helens League titles as well as one district crown.

“I enjoyed my time. It was a lot of fun,” Hook said. “I have a good relationship with a lot of kids. I just felt it was time to step away and let somebody younger do this, somebody who wants to spend the time that’s needed to do this.”

He said he was tired from the long hours, including the preparation for summer ball and other off-season activities.

Hook submitted his resignation earlier this week. He was told by Jim Condon, Skyview’s athletic director, that the school hopes to hire a replacement soon, in order to be ready to go for summer drills.

As for Hook, he said he will be around for a number games next year — as a fan.

He also plans on traveling to watch former players perform in college, noting Ashlee Smith at St. Mary’s in California and Jill Jagelski at Carroll College in Montana. He also wants to visit Abby Olbrich and Sarah Click, former Skyview basketball standouts who now star for Linfield tennis.

Hook went 137-63 — a .685 winning percentage — and never had a losing season at Skyview. The 2008 squad went 25-4.
