MADRID (AP) — Thomson Cherogony of Kenya set a Madrid Marathon record in winning the race in a time of 2 hours, 11 minutes, 27 seconds Sunday.

The 31-year-old Cherogony’s performance eclipsed fellow Kenyan Joseph Ngolepus’ 2006 time by three seconds. Fellow Kenyans Dickson Chumba (2:11:54) and Jonathan Kipkosgei (2:13:06) rounded out the top three.

Ethiopian runner Desta Girma Tadese won the women’s event in 2:34:39 from compatriot Hadish Letay Negash in 2:34:58 and Justyna Bak of Poland, who was third in 2:37:52.

Two-time Olympic champion and marathon world record-holder Haile Gebrselassie also ran in the Spanish capital, but the Ethiopian runner was competing in the 10-kilometer event he won in a time of 28:56.
