BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) — Repairs have started on a Nooksack River levee that was badly damaged by flooding in January 2009.

The Bellingham Herald reports it’s the first of five levee repair projects happening in Whatcom County this year.

Whatcom County officials say this particular levee, near Lynden, has been a problem every time there is flooding. They believe when a flood happens, the repairs will keep workers from having to sandbag all the time.

The project cost about $400,000.

Four other projects are expected to be completed later this summer. Two of the repairs will be near Ferndale, one in Lynden and one in Deming.
