OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Gov. Chris Gregoire is scheduled to act on a state employee furlough bill at a Tuesday afternoon bill signing in Olympia.
The measure passed by the Legislature calls for many state employees to take 10 unpaid days off work over the next year. Agencies have the option of coming up with their own plans to save the same amount of money.
Gregoire’s legislative and budget director Marty Brown told The News Tribune of Tacoma she’d like to make the furloughs more orderly, shutting agencies on the same day if possible.
Brown says the governor also is concerned about inequities in exemptions for public safety, health and some other employees.
