BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles have purchased the contract of right-hander Alfredo Simon from Triple-A Norfolk and optioned struggling reliever Kam Mickolio to the same minor league club.
The move, made Tuesday, was designed to improve a bullpen that was 1-6 with a 4.70 ERA through Sunday.
Simon began the 2009 season in Baltimore’s starting rotation before going on the disabled list in mid-April. He underwent elbow ligament replacement surgery last May.
Simon was 1-1 with 1.59 ERA in four games with Norfolk this month.
Mickolio had a 7.36 ERA in three games with the Orioles after being recalled on April 15.
To make room for Simon on the 40-man roster, the Orioles designated left-hander Wilfredo Perez for assignment.
