ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays have purchased the contract of infielder Dan Johnson from Triple-A Durham to provide depth off the bench.

Johnson hit .303 with 30 homers and 95 RBIs in 98 games for Durham.

Rays first baseman Carlos Pena has missed two straight games with right foot soreness. Manager Joe Maddon said Monday night the team should know more about Pena’s status on Tuesday and didn’t rule out the infielder going on the disabled list.

Tampa Bay optioned Jeremy Hellickson to Durham right after the right-hander won his major league debut, a 4-2 win over Minnesota on Monday night.

Hellickson is expected to rejoin the team and work out of the bullpen later this season.
