Aberdeen lumber mill sells biomass electricity

ABERDEEN, Wash. (AP) — The Sierra Pacific Industries sawmill at Aberdeen makes more than lumber.

It also burns the sawdust, tree bark and wood scraps to generate electricity. It can supply enough power to serve about 18,000 homes.

The mill is selling the power to the Grays Harbor PUD.

The Aberdeen Daily World reports that helps the utility meet an initiative approved by Washington voters in 2006. Utilities are required to have a certain amount of green energy — electricity generated from renewable sources such as solar, wind or biomass.
