HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu city officials are in talks aimed at ending a contract that calls for a company to ship Oahu’s trash to a Columbia River landfill.
Deputy Corporation Counsel Dana Viola told a city council committee Tuesday that the city would like to resolve the matter as quickly as possible.
Hawaiian Waste Systems President Michael Chutz says he couldn’t comment on the talks.
The company was to start sending the garbage in October. But delays led to an estimated 20,000 tons of trash piling up at Campbell Industrial Park.
Last Thursday, a federal judge in Spokane issued a temporary restraining order to stop any shipments. The move came after the Yakama Nation and several environmental groups filed a lawsuit to stop the plan.
