In the region: Blazers will tip off 2010-11 on the road

The Portland Trail Blazers will tip off the 2010-11 season on the road. The Blazers are scheduled to travel to Los Angeles to face the Clippers at 7:30 p.m. Oct 27. Portland will face Chicago on Nov. 1 in a road contest, and visit Golden State on Dec. 25 in a 7:30 game that will be televised on ESPN.

The remainder of the Blazers’ regular-season schedule is expected to be released next week. Portland’s entire seven-game preseason run was announced Tuesday.

The Blazers will play four home games, highlighted by a return trip to Memorial Coliseum for an Oct. 11 matchup against Utah. Portland will also host the Clippers (Oct. 5), the Warriors (Oct. 16) and Nuggets (Oct. 21). Road contests are scheduled at Utah (Oct. 7), at Denver (Oct. 8) and at Golden State (Oct. 16).

The Blazers’ annual Wells Fargo Fan Fest will be held Oct. 1 at the Rose Garden. The intrasquad scrimmage is free, with tickets being made available Sept. 6 at Wells Fargo branches in Southwest Washington and Oregon. Preseason tickets will go on sale in mid-September.

Fencer Kelsey places fifth

Brush Prairie native Seth Kelsey placed fifth on Monday in the men’s epee at the Pan American fencing championships in San Jose, Costa Rica. He narrowly missed reaching the semifinal round. Also on Monday, Lee Kiefer of Lexington, Ky., won the women’s foil competition.

The Pan American Championships continue through Saturday. The Championships serve as an individual and team qualifying tournament for the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Winterhawks sign forward

The Portland Winterhawks signed 17-year-old Swiss forward Sven Bartschi, the seventh overall pick in the 2010 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft in June.

Bartschi has international experience, having played for the Swiss World Under-18 team in both 2009 and 2010. At the 2009 tournament, he played with current Winterhawks winger Nino Niederreiter.

SOCCER: Richards all-league

• Camas High School graduate Brent Richards of the Portland Timbers U-23 squad was named to the Premier Development League all-league team. Richards, 20, finished the regular season among league leaders in scoring and goals scored. He was the Timbers U-23s’ leading scorer with 14 goals and two assists in 12 games during the campaign. Richards set a team record with four goals in a single game as part of a five-game scoring streak.

• The Portland Timbers announced that season tickets in 10 different sections are sold out for the team’s inaugural Major League Soccer season in 2011. Additionally, all but three suites for the team’s first MLS campaign have been sold.
