Volunteers needed to build trail

SKAMANIA –Volunteers are needed for work parties Saturday, Sunday and Aug. 12 to build a new hiking and equestrian trail along Hardy Creek in Beacon Rock State Park.

Red Cross offers wilderness course

A new, 16-hour wilderness first-aid course is being offered by the American Red Cross of Southwest Washington.

The course will include neck, head and spinal injuries; heat-related emergencies, hypothermia, altitude illnesses, burns, allergies, bone and joint injuries and wounds and wound infections.

Participants in the course must be 14 and have certification in adult CPR/AED, which the Red Cross can help secure.

Special deer hunt offered

OLYMPIA — Applications are being accepted until midnight Aug. 18 for a chance to hunt deer this fall on the 6,000-acre Charles and Mary Eder unit of Scotch Creek Wildlife area in Okanogan County.

Eighteen applicants will be chose in a drawing scheduled Aug. 19. Six permits will be for modern firearms hunters, six for archers and six for muzzleloaders.

“This is part of our effort to provide quality hunting opportunities in Washington,” said Matt Monda, wildlife manager for the north-central region of the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Applications can be submitted on the agency website at http;//wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/permits/scotchcreek or calling either the regional office a 509-754-4624 or Olympia office at 360-902-2515.

The season will be Sept. 1-24 for archers, Sept. 25-Oct. 3 for muzzleloaders and Oct. 16-24 for modern firearms.
