Pendleton rolls past Cascade All-Stars at softball regional

The Cascade Little League softball team was handed its third loss to an overpowering opponent Wednesday against Pendleton Little League from Oregon.

The 17-1 score marked the second win for Pendleton (2-1) in pool play at the Western Regional, which will determine a berth to the Little League Softball World Series. Cascade, which qualified for the tournament by virtue of being champion of the host district, dropped to 0-3.

Pendleton’s Kelsee Cody was 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored. Tiah Grass and Kiersten Murphy both reached base three times for Pendleton, which was backed by good pitching from starter Skylar Rockwell.

Cascade’s Toni Jefferies reached base in both at-bats, getting a line-drive single and a walk. Dabrielle Lowman and Natalie Stofiel also had hits for Cascade.

Pendleton will next face Alaska at 1 p.m. today. Cascade will face Utah in its final game at 6 p.m. Friday.

Southern California 4, Alaska 1 — The team from Burbank scored four times in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking advantage of an error, two walks, and two hits.

Alaska had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning, but Michelle Santiago delivered a two-run double to key the big inning for Southern California.

Montana 8, Arizona 3 — Anna Paine reached base on a single, an error and a fielder’s choice and scored three runs for the winners. Addy Daubert had a three-run double in a five-run fourth inning for Montana.

Hazel Dell Metro 8, Northern Oregon 6 — Jay Becker was 2 for 3 with a run-scoring triple, and Andrew Free smacked a three-run double in the top of the first inning as Hazel Dell Metro improved to 2-0 in pool play at the Pacific Northwest Regional tournament in Lewiston, Idaho, beating Mound Time of Tualatin/Beaverton, Ore.

Kaiden Grotte pitched 3⅔ innings of relief for the victory, and Becker recorded the save by pitching the final 1⅔ innings.

Free’s bases-clearing double was part of a four-run first inning for Hazel Dell Metro. Mound Time led 5-4 after three innings before Hazel Dell Metro reclaimed the lead in the fourth and held on for the win.

Hazel Dell Metro faces Calgary, Alberta, at 10 a.m. today then host team Lewiston to conclude pool play at 4 p.m. Friday.

Two teams from each pool of five advance to the semifinals Saturday.
