WALLA WALLA, Wash. (AP) — Walla Walla County emergency management estimates a wildfire that started in grasslands on Friday has spread to cover about 36 square miles — or 23,000 acres.

Emergency Management Director Gay Ernst says the fire north of the small town of Eureka and about 25 miles northwest of Walla Walla is no longer threatening any structures. Firefighters saved a handful of homes, outbuildings and barns Friday night.

Ernst says firefighters were hoping to contain the fire by Saturday afternoon.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
