CLEVELAND (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have signed their No. 1 pick from the 2010 Draft, right-hander Alex Wimmers.
The Twins announced the signing of the former Ohio State star to a $1,332,000 bonus minutes before taking the field Friday night for the first game of a three-game series in Cleveland against the Indians.
Wimmers went 9-0 with a 1.60 ERA as a junior this spring for the Buckeyes, pitching the first nine-inning no-hitter in school history. He had 86 strikeouts and 23 walks in 73 innings, did not allow a home run and held opposing hitters to a .218 batting average.
Wimmers, selected No. 21 overall, will report to the Fort Myers Miracle of the Class A Florida State League on Sunday.
