WA officer kills dog during DUI arrest

BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) — A Bremerton police sergeant fatally shot a Great Dane that bit him during a DUI investigation.

The sergeant says in his report that he heard a young couple arguing early Friday after they got out of a pickup that had just arrived at a home. He drove past to check on them and the man said they were fine. But the sergeant contends the man was slurring his words and unsteady on his feet, so the officer began a DUI investigation.

A struggle ensued and the sergeant says the young woman joined the fight. Then the dog came out of the house and started biting the officer’s arm. He fired three shots, fatally wounding it.

The man was arrested for investigation of DUI, assaulting an officer and resisting arrest. The woman was arrested for investigation of assaulting an officer and resisting arrest.

The officer was treated at a hospital.
