PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A blocked sewer pipe has been blamed for sending 1,400 gallons of raw sewage into the Willamette River in downtown Portland.

City officials said an electronic monitor alarm detected the overflow from a sewer outfall pipe late Monday morning on the east side of the river south of the Morrison Bridge.

Subcontractors on a Portland streetcar project were working to pump sewage around a diversion structure from one manhole to another, when the accidental discharge occurred.

Officials warned against any contact with river water near the Morrison Bridge through Tuesday because of a higher bacteria levels.
