A Vancouver gang member accused of stabbing a 13-year-old boy made his first court appearance Monday on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder.

Eduardo Gonzalez-Moreno, who turns 18 on Thursday, was remanded to adult court.

Clark County Superior Court Judge John Nichols set bail at $300,000 for Gonzalez-Moreno, and appointed attorney Ed Dunkerly to represent him.

Gonzalez-Moreno is accused of stabbing the victim at 3:25 a.m. Thursday in the 2000 block of Brandt Road. Responding police officers found the boy lying in the street, and he was transported to a local hospital with injuries that didn’t appear to be life-threatening. He had been stabbed multiple times, according to court documents.

The weapon believed to have been used in the assault was recovered, police said.

The victim allegedly identified Gonzalez-Moreno as his assailant. Investigators with the Safe Streets Task Force gang unit then questioned Gonzalez-Moreno. He said he was acting in self-defense when he stabbed the boy, according to court documents.

Investigators believe the assault was gang-related and say the area were the two live — the Villas on Bridge Creek apartment complex — has seen a surge in gang activity recently.

Gonzalez-Moreno, a local high school student, told investigators that he has linked with the Sureno gang since ninth grade.

He will be arraigned Aug. 20.
