PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon electronics recycling program is moving at a faster pace in its second year, with nearly 12 million pounds of old TVs, computers and monitors collected through June 2010.
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality says that’s 2.4 million pounds more than the total collected by the same time last year.
The agency says several factors are behind the increase in e-waste recycled this year, including growing public awareness of the state “E-Cycles” program.
But officials say it’s likely a direct effect of a TV, computer and monitor disposal ban that went into effect at the beginning of 2010.
Garbage collectors, transfer station operators and other disposal sites are working with customers to redirect those items into the program.
