JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. (AP) — The nation’s top officer says the U.S. military is shifting focus from executing the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to helping the troops who’ve fought to adjust to life outside the war zone.

Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is telling troops he’s dedicated to making sure service members get the assistance they need to make a successful transition.

Mullen spoke to several hundred troops at Joint Base Lewis-McChord on Monday.

He says the military has an awful lot of problems it has overlooked while concentrating on the combat mission. Those include increased suicide rates and homelessness among veterans. He expects the problems will increase as units spend more time at home.
