Community notebook: Morales is golden at nationals

Tyler Morales from Camas recently won a Junior Golden Gloves national boxing championship.

Tyler won the 70-pound title in the 9-10 age division during the national tournament, which took place July 21-24 in Mesquite, Nevada.

Tyler is going to be a fifth-grader at Columbia Valley Elementary School. He is a three-time Washington Junior Golden Gloves champion. He has competed in regional and national competitions in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Kansas and Nevada.

Victor Morales, Jr., Tyler’s older brother, placed second in the 80-pound class for ages 11-12 at the Junior Golden Gloves nationals, losing a split decision. A two-time Pacific Northwest champion, Victor Morales, Jr., is entering grade seven at Shahala Middle School.

Both boys box for West Portland Boxing Club, where their father, Victor, is a coach.

Special Olympics softball success

Six softball teams from Clark County competed at the Special Olympics Southwest Washington regional tournament on July 31 at LBA Park in Olympia.

Winning the gold medal were the Clark County Royals in the Masters 6 Division. Their coach was Brandi Zychowicz. Playing for the Royals were: Dirk Alf, Nicole Banks, Dianna Bartusek, Chelsey Baxter, Joseph Dawson, Karen Carico, Jonathon Chidester, Shawn Hassig, Thomas Kukkola, Jeff Smith, Jason Sorenson, and Michael Suire.

The Clark County Cubs won a T-ball silver medal. Their coach was Elizabeth Francis. Their players were Michael Abe, Jenna Anderson, Mathew Baker, Jacob Blunt, James Byers, William Cuff, Krista Downey, Craig Francis, Dusty Lang, Greg Martino, and Charles Rymer.

The Clark County Reds took second in the Master 1 Division. They were coached by Bryan Cook. The players were: Michael Cook, Nathan Ellis, Russ Jones, Peter Li, Larry Mathews, Cory Robak, Robert Schmitz, Ivan Soltero, Sean Starr, Michael Vanoni, and Schyler Zychowicz.

The Mariners took third place in the Master 4 Division. Their coach was Audrey Stekhuizen. Players were: Adam Barr, Derek Dalke, Dennis Dole, Jr., Jason Downey, Ron Gebbie, Becky Johnson, Raquael Paul, Chris Rector, Deanna Sanders, Samantha Spencer, and Andrew Stekhuizen.

The Braves won a bronze medal in the Master 5 Division. They were coached by Rick Cook. Players were Jason Baumgartner, Tim Cook, Kevin Davis, John Doumit, Matt Falkerts, Kelly Jeans, Lauren Milam, Cheron Skelton, Everett Smith, John Veals, Ally Warner, and Bryanna Zychowicz.

Five members of the Rockies won individual skills medals. Winning gold were Daton Chisum, Kendra Eaton and Mallory Hamilton. Taking bronze were Holly Cook and Michael Lamb.

The Reds, Royals, and three of the Rockies athletes will be compete in softball at the Washington Special Olympics Summer Sports Classic on Aug. 21-22 in Everett.

Local runs draw crowds

Charles Carpenter of Vancouver won the 10-kilometer race as part of the Servent Festival Races for the Homeless. A 10-K and a 5-kilometer run and walk were staged on Saturday morning at Marine Park in Vancouver.

Carpenter, 16, finished first in the 10-kilometer race with a time of 37 minutes and 5 seconds. Anthony Lee of Vancouver, also 16, had an identical time and placed second on the official results.

A total of 120 runners and walkers finished the 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) course.

Another 117 runners and Calkers completed the 5-kilometer race. The 5-K winner was Mason Bouchet, 18, from Canyon City, Calif. His time of 18:13 was 32 seconds faster than 14-year-old Kyle Degraff from La Center, who placed second.

The event raised money for Open House Ministries, which assists homeless families in the region.

• Sarah Porter of Hockinson won Saturday’s Skirt Chaser 5-kilometer race in Vancouver.

Part of a nationwide series of races staged by Skirt Sports and hosted in Vancouver by Fit Right Northwest, the 3.1-mile run had a unique format. Women were given a 3-minute head start.

Porter’s time of 16 minutes and 56 seconds won the race, which started and ended at Esther Short Park in downtown Vancouver.

Only two men completed the course faster than Porter. Jared Newell finished in 15:55 (for a Skirt Chaser time of 18:55), and Aaron Ladd finished in 16:52 (19:52).

A total of 298 runners completed the race. Some of the proceeds from the run will be donated to the Arc of Clark County, according to event organizers.

Vancouver boy wins Portland golf tourney

Eddie Abellar of Vancouver shot a 36-hole score of 155 to win the boys 11-12 division of the Portland City Junior Championship golf tournament.

The two-day tournament concluded on Aug. 3 at Rose City Golf Course in Portland.

Nicholas Huff from Vancouver placed second in the boys 14-15 age division.

The Portland City Junior Championship was first played in 1986.

VTC women are tennis champions

A team of women from the Vancouver Tennis Center won the women’s 4.5-level championship of the United States Tennis Association League Pacific Northwest Section. The Vancouver team defeated Sunset Athletic Club of Portland 3-2 in Sunday’s finals.

Details were not available.

• Results from the third doubles tournament in Vancouver Tennis Center’s Grand Slam tournament series are in the Community Sports Scoreboard. The Wimbledon Doubles tournament was played July 30-Aug. 1.

Space remains in Hoops on the River

The registration deadline is at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, for the 2010 Hoops on the River three-on-three basketball tournament. The tournament will be played Aug. 21-22 in at Vancouver Landing near the Red Lion Inn at the Quay.

The tournament offers a variety of competitive divisions. It is a fundraising event for Share House.

Completed registration forms should be delivered in person to the Share Volunteer Center, 1708 Main Street.

All proceeds from Hoops on the River benefit Share and the hungry and homeless in Clark County. Last year’s event raised a gross total of more than $169,000 to support Share’s program and services, which are accessed by more than 10,000 individuals each year.

Run aids scholarship

The Jordan Crouch 5K Memorial Run and Walk is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Aug. 21 at Marine Park in Vancouver. The event will benefit a scholarship in Crouch’s memory at Seattle Pacific University.

A Skyview High School graduate and Seattle Pacific, Crouch died unexpectedly this year.

Cost is $25 (race T-shirt included) or $15, for those who register by Aug. 14 through the Active.com website. Prices are $10 more on the day of the event.
