GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — A Cave Junction man who shot at a Josephine County sheriff’s deputy and his dog in June has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Kelly Mason pleaded guilty to charges of attempted assault and being a felon in possession of a gun.

The sheriff’s office said the 35-year-old Mason fled from a car during a traffic stop on June 25 and fired two shots at the deputy and his dog, but missed.

Mason was captured near Kerby after a two-day police stakeout of his campsite on Rough and Ready Creek.

At the time of the shooting, Mason was on parole in an assault case. He also has prior convictions for burglary and possession of methamphetamine.
