BURNS, Ore. (AP) — A small plane crash in a remote area of southeast Oregon has killed two men, including a prominent figure in horse racing.

The victims were identified Thursday as 58-year-old Frank “Scoop” Vessels of Bonsall, Calif., and 73-year-old Sam Cannell of Anderson, Calif.

Authorities said both men were killed instantly when the plane crashed Wednesday on its way to Montana from Redding, Calif.

Vessels is the owner of Vessels Stallion Farm near San Diego and is past president of the American Quarter Horse Association.

Harney County Sheriff Dave Glerup said Thursday that witnesses south of Burns saw the twin-engine Aero Commander 500-B break up on its way to the ground.

The cause has not been determined. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.
