GREENWATER, Wash. (AP) — An 11-year old boy who was swept away while trying to cross the White River has been found dead just outside Mount Rainier National Park.
Park spokeswoman Patty Wold says the boy and a 51-year-old family friend were knocked over while crossing the river inside the park on Thursday. The friend was able to hold onto the boy as the water swept them downstream, but lost his grip after about a quarter of a mile. Wold says the adult was able to get himself safely out of the water.
The boy’s body was recovered near the Silver Creek Campground just outside the park’s boundary.
