CANNON BEACH, Ore. (AP) — City officials in Cannon Beach on the Oregon coast want the public to stop feeding the animals.
If a public education effort planned by the city doesn’t work, the Cannon Beach City Council will consider a proposed ordinance that carries a $500 penalty.
Fliers will be printed and distributed to hotels, restaurants and other locations frequented by tourists warning them about the dangers of feeding birds and wildlife.
A draft flier shows a photo of an outfall pipe for a stream that empties on to the beach, warning that birds often roost on roofs near the stream, and their droppings contaminate it.
