Ore. beach town wants ban on feeding wildlife

CANNON BEACH, Ore. (AP) — City officials in Cannon Beach on the Oregon coast want the public to stop feeding the animals.

If a public education effort planned by the city doesn’t work, the Cannon Beach City Council will consider a proposed ordinance that carries a $500 penalty.

Fliers will be printed and distributed to hotels, restaurants and other locations frequented by tourists warning them about the dangers of feeding birds and wildlife.

A draft flier shows a photo of an outfall pipe for a stream that empties on to the beach, warning that birds often roost on roofs near the stream, and their droppings contaminate it.

The draft brochure also says wildlife can find their own food and “most food offered by humans is unhealthy for them.”
