Meth defendant flees Clallam Co. court

PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) — A woman apparently didn’t like being told by a Clallam County Superior Court judge that she was going to jail. So she left the courthouse.

The Peninsula Daily News reports that 35-year-old Travis Louise Dinius bolted when Judge George Wood told her she’d have to serve 16 months for violating the terms of a court-mandated drug treatment program by using methamphetamine.

And there was no one there to stop her. There were no jail staff members in the courtroom because Dinius was not in custody when she appeared for the hearing, and the head of court security was on vacation.

Sheriff Bill Benedict says Dinius was not the first person to escape from the court, and she probably won’t be the last because the Sheriff’s Office doesn’t have the money to hire another court security officer.

A warrant was issued for her arrest.
