MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire wanted to give left fielder Delmon Young a breather.

So on Sunday, Gardenhire put together a lineup that didn’t feature Young for the first time since June 11.

If Young doesn’t come off the bench in Sunday’s game against Oakland, it would be the first time he has had a full day off since May 27.

In that stretch, Young has raised his batting average by more than 50 points and is hitting .316 with 14 home runs and 84 RBIs.

Gardenhire said that Young, who split time last season for the Twins, could use a day off. The manager hopes that the combination of watching on Sunday and the team’s day off on Monday will get him refreshed for the key AL Central series with the Chicago White Sox that begins Tuesday.
