PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The family of a 23-year-old woman killed at a busy Portland crosswalk has filed a $3.7 million lawsuit against the city, claiming negligence for a burnt-out streetlight and lack of crosswalk maintenance.

The lawsuit filed last week in Multnomah County Circuit Court by the family of Lindsay Alyse Leonard claims paint on the crosswalk had worn away, making it more difficult to see.

The suit also claims the city was aware of the problem at least a year before Leonard and a friend were struck after grocery shopping at a nearby store last November.

The Oregonian reported the family of the friend, 24-year-old Jessica Finlay, who died later, have filed notice with the city indicating they also may sue. Leonard was a recent Reed College graduate and Finlay attended Reed.
