June Canty, education professor and director of the College of Education at Washington State University Vancouver, has been appointed by Gov. Chris Gregoire to a second fouryear term on the Washington Professional Educator Standards Board.

Canty will serve as vice chairwoman and also sit on the board’s executive and strategic planning committees.

She was first appointed in 2006 as one of three representatives from higher education. In 2009, Gregoire trimmed the board from 21 to 12 members. Canty is the sole remaining higher education appointee.

The standards board and its executive committee meet six times a year, at various sites in Washington. The latter now will conduct webinars and phone meetings only, as part of budget-saving measures.

The standards board was created in 2000 with the goal of maximizing educator quality. It sets policies and requirements for the preparation and certification of education professionals.
