PROVO, Utah (AP) — BYU has fired men’s volleyball coach Shawn Patchell.

Athletic director Tom Holmoe said in a statement Wednesday that Patchell’s dismissal is effective immediately. Holmoe said BYU is investigating possible NCAA violations in the program, but would not elaborate.

BYU assistant Rob Neilson will serve as interim coach.

In 2008, Brigham Young was placed on three years’ probation by the NCAA for violations in the men’s volleyball program.

The violations cited BYU and former volleyball coach Tom Peterson for failing to monitor the program adequately. The probation runs through March 10, 2011. It included the program losing half a scholarship for two years and limits in recruiting.
