A police dog led officers Tuesday to a Woodland teen who earlier in the day had been run out of a homeowner’s yard while he was allegedly gathering unspecified items.

The 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of burglary, theft, malicious mischief and drug-related charges. He was lodged in the juvenile center in Kelso. Police declined to identify the suspect.

It was about 4:24 a.m., a woman told Woodland Police officers, when she woke to find someone in her room. She initially thought it was one of the home’s other occupants.

When she got out of bed, though, she saw someone gathering objects in her yard, according to a news bulletin issued by the Woodland Police Department. When the person saw her, police said, he took off for the fence and kicked the woman in the shoulder as she tried to grab him. The woman was not injured.

The person made it over the fence and fled.

A police dog from the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office followed his path to a nearby apartment complex.

An investigation at the apartments led officers to the 17-year-old.

He is suspected in several burglaries and auto prowls in the area dating back to April, according to the bulletin. Officers recovered a “large amount of stolen property,” the bulletin said.
