SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Youth Authority expects more layoffs and reduced capacity with the state’s deepening budget crisis.
The Statesman Journal reported the agency’s deputy director has already sent a memo telling staffers to prepare for the closure of 75 beds and 55 layoffs.
In an updated message to staff on Wednesday, agency officials did not specify how many more layoffs and bed closures might be required.
In May, state economists predicted Oregon was facing a $577 million budget hole. In response, Gov. Ted Kulongoski ordered across-the-board 9 percent cuts for all state agencies.
