Weather Eye: Put on your happy face and enjoy cooler weather

The roller coaster summer continues, and we are on the way down rather quickly, it seems, from the peak of the ride. A trough of low pressure will dominate the skies, with another one over the weekend. Highs could struggle to get out of the 60s over the weekend.

Next week, we go up a ways and then tumble back down. That is the only way I can illustrate our weather pattern; at least we aren’t on the Splash Mountain amusement ride. We have gone some 48 days now without measurable rainfall. And it is beginning to show. Take a look around at the roadsides with burned areas; dry, brown grass; and scorched plants and shrubs. Even many irrigated lawns are having difficulty maintaining the deep green we have come to be famous for. Of course, a few days of those very dry east winds didn’t help. We have logged in 10 days at 90 degrees or better, close to the average of 12 to 13 days annually.

I saw many people with happy faces Wednesday, thanks in part to the cooler weather. Wednesday afternoon the temperatures were about 20 degrees cooler than Tuesday’s, as of 4 p.m. One friend at work said he was going home to barbecue in celebration of the cooler weather. Perhaps it has been too hot to grill!

If you are heading north over the weekend, there is a risk of light showers, especially along the central and north coast and in the Puget Sound region. Highs across all of Western Washington will struggle to get out of the 60s. Quite the contrast from last weekend for sure.

Any chance of any more 90-degree weather the remainder of the summer? Sure, my gut feeling thinks so. However, for any stretch of days like we just experienced, the probability is greatly reduced.

Meanwhile, I have a smile on my face. Cheers!
