SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. (AP) — An ordinance that bans panhandling at busy intersections goes into effect next week in Spokane Valley.
The ordinance prohibits soliciting — known as “flying the sign” — within 100 feet of an arterial intersection or freeway onramp.
The Spokane sheriff’s office says the restriction is intended to keep traffic moving and reduce collisions.
Police told KXLY-TV they’ll warn panhandlers the rest of the month and start writing tickets by Labor Day weekend.
